Lake Tillery, Morrow Mountain and the Uwharries make a good weekend together. Morrow Mountain offers the closest lake-and-land combination; the national forest opens up a separate day of trails, camping and inland exploring.
Morrow Mountain State Park reaches from the upper Lake Tillery shoreline into the hills on the Stanly County side. A trail, an overlook and time by the water can fill a day here without traveling across the region.
The summit, campground, boathouse and boat ramp are in different parts of the park. Use the park map for the stop you want. Rentals are seasonal, and the swimming pool is closed for the 2026 season; current facility notices are linked below.
Into Uwharrie National Forest
The Uwharrie National Recreation Trail has access along both the NC 24/27 and NC 109 corridors. A named trailhead gives you a place to park and a definite starting point, unlike the forest's general map marker.
Badin Lake recreation and camping are part of this wider forest trip, on a different lake from Tillery. Hiking, equestrian and off-highway vehicle routes have different permitted uses. The Forest Service's maps and alerts are essential for matching a route to the activity.
A short walk or a longer trail
At Morrow Mountain, the park lists Laurel Trail at 0.7 miles and Mountain Loop Trail at 0.8 miles, both rated easy. Fall Mountain Trail is a longer, moderate 4.1-mile choice. Use the park map to find the starting point and check trail notices before leaving the car.
Easy does not mean wheelchair-accessible: the park's trail table does not mark these routes as accessible. The park staff can help match a visit to mobility needs. In the national forest, the NC 24/27 and NC 109 trailheads are useful starting points, but choose the actual walking route before setting out.
Wildlife along the way
Morrow Mountain's shoreline is a place to watch birds as well as boats; NC State Parks notes bald-eagle sightings from Lake Tillery. Bring binoculars, give wildlife room and enjoy what turns up.
For a forest walk, bring drinking water and insect protection and check yourself for ticks afterward. Uwharrie is also used for hunting, so check the season and the Forest Service's bright-clothing guidance. Trail-use signs matter: a walking route, horse trail and off-highway vehicle route are not interchangeable.
One day or a weekend?
For a lake-first day, let the launch or rental determine where you arrive. A meal on that side of the lake is a simple addition after the boat is returned or loaded.
For a land-first day, Morrow Mountain keeps you close to Tillery. A forest trail near Troy or Eldorado makes the Uwharries the main outing instead. With a weekend, give each its own day and leave room to swap them if the weather changes.
Towns along the way
Troy is inland on the forest side. For history east of Tillery, visit Mount Gilead and Town Creek; for meals and museums west and north of the lake, look to Albemarle and Badin.
Small museums often have limited opening hours, so they work best as deliberate stops rather than guaranteed rainy-day backups. The event calendar can add a concert, festival or other dated reason to visit a town along your route.

The Uwharrie National Forest opens up a longer land-based trip beyond Lake Tillery: hiking, camping, equestrian routes and motorized trails across separate recreation areas.
Town Creek interprets a Pee Dee ceremonial center near Mount Gilead. The site gives a lake-area visit a deeper historical perspective, with a different story from the nearby town museums.
The visitor center and gift shop are closed effective July 28, 2026; the mound and village remain open for self-guided visits Tuesday through Saturday, 9–5, according to the official notice.
