Morrow Mountain, from the overlook to the water

Morrow Mountain State Park reaches from the upper Lake Tillery shoreline into the hills on the Stanly County side. A trail, an overlook and time by the water can fill a day here without traveling across the region.

The summit, campground, boathouse and boat ramp are in different parts of the park. Use the park map for the stop you want. Rentals are seasonal, and the swimming pool is closed for the 2026 season; current facility notices are linked below.

Wildlife along the way

Morrow Mountain's shoreline is a place to watch birds as well as boats; NC State Parks notes bald-eagle sightings from Lake Tillery. Bring binoculars, give wildlife room and enjoy what turns up.

For a forest walk, bring drinking water and insect protection and check yourself for ticks afterward. Uwharrie is also used for hunting, so check the season and the Forest Service's bright-clothing guidance. Trail-use signs matter: a walking route, horse trail and off-highway vehicle route are not interchangeable.

One day or a weekend?

For a lake-first day, let the launch or rental determine where you arrive. A meal on that side of the lake is a simple addition after the boat is returned or loaded.

For a land-first day, Morrow Mountain keeps you close to Tillery. A forest trail near Troy or Eldorado makes the Uwharries the main outing instead. With a weekend, give each its own day and leave room to swap them if the weather changes.

Towns along the way

Troy is inland on the forest side. For history east of Tillery, visit Mount Gilead and Town Creek; for meals and museums west and north of the lake, look to Albemarle and Badin.

Small museums often have limited opening hours, so they work best as deliberate stops rather than guaranteed rainy-day backups. The event calendar can add a concert, festival or other dated reason to visit a town along your route.

A town walk in Troy

Troy’s Nature Trail greenway extends for more than six miles and connects to Roy J. Maness Nature Preserve. Use the town’s Glen Road access near NC 24/27 for a shorter walk; choose your turn-around point before setting off. This is separate from the forest’s hiking and motor-vehicle routes.

A hiking section, a loop or a bike ride?

For a walk, the white-blazed Uwharrie National Recreation Trail follows streams and rocky terrain, with several entrances allowing a shorter section and return. From the NC 24/27 trailhead, yellow-blazed Dutchman’s Creek connects with the southern Uwharrie Trail for loop options. Choose your route on the official map before setting out.

For a mountain-bike outing, use the designated Wood Run routes off NC 24/27 east of the Tillery bridges. The white-blazed Uwharrie and yellow-blazed Dutchman’s Creek hiking trails are closed to mountain bikes. A meal in Troy or on the NC 109 forest corridor fits a forest day; check the restaurant’s hours before making it the final stop.

A short downtown walk or a longer greenway?

Troy lists the 1¼-mile Troy Walks route through downtown neighborhoods and Main Street. Compare it with the longer Nature Trail greenway when choosing a shorter town visit. Check the town’s route information first: a precise start, parking, surface and accessibility are not established here, and the town-office address is not a verified trailhead.
