Spend the afternoon on Tillery, walk at Morrow Mountain, visit Town Creek or linger over a meal in town. There is a lake-area day here with or without a boat.
A boat day might start at a public ramp, with a rental at Lilly's Bridge, or with a kayak at Swift Island. The Sandbar is a boat-only gathering place, not a drive-up or staffed public beach.
On land, Morrow Mountain offers a park visit with a view of the lake. Town Creek brings a different reason to come: a Pee Dee ceremonial site near Mount Gilead. A town museum and a nearby meal can make a shorter outing.
With children, or out of the rain
A park visit gives a family room to spend time outside without committing to a full boat day. Capel Centennial Park in Troy has a playground and skate park; Morrow Mountain brings trails and picnic options closer to Tillery. Its pool is closed for the 2026 season.
For indoor time, there is the Stanly County History Center, Badin Historic Museum, Mount Gilead Museum, Trilogy Books or an Albemarle cinema. Small museums have limited schedules. Town Creek's visitor center is currently closed, so its open mound and village are an outdoor visit.
A round of golf near Tillery
Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood welcomes visiting golfers and offers tee-time booking. It is a useful west-side choice when a round, rather than a launch, is the day's main activity. Book through the club and leave time for a meal in Norwood afterward.
Across the lake, Tillery Tradition in Mount Gilead describes itself as a private club. Ask about an eligible guest arrangement before planning to play; a course appearing on a visitor map does not promise public tee times. For a wider search, Explore includes other regional courses.
History, forest and town events
Town Creek and the town museums tell different parts of the region's history. Morrow Mountain and the Uwharrie trailheads offer distinct outdoor trips. A named trailhead is the right starting point for a walk in the forest.
Festivals, music and farm programs give some visits a particular date. The calendar keeps those alongside their organizer's information. Wineries make another regional outing, with reservations where needed and a designated driver.

Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site
Mount Gilead / Pee Dee River valley
Town Creek interprets a Pee Dee ceremonial center near Mount Gilead. The site gives a lake-area visit a deeper historical perspective, with a different story from the nearby town museums.
The visitor center and gift shop are closed effective July 28, 2026; the mound and village remain open for self-guided visits Tuesday through Saturday, 9–5, according to the official notice.
